A Day In The Life
August, a month you associate with the holiday season and a time your Fit-Bit re-charges its battery and the fireworks on 10,000 steps are not so frequent.
If only this was the case, it seemed like a month where people were inspired and wanted to get the jobs that had been pending, done. This, alongside the unpredictable weather and we were nearly at full capacity – but I’m not complaining.
My first day of the month started with setting up the chaps with a bathroom refurbishment in Ramillies Court, Soho. After which, I then headed over to Greys Inn Road, Holborn as the painters and decorators were starting a complete redecoration of a splendid Mews property, then back to Rupert Street in Soho to give the plumbers access to the property so they could fit a new bathroom suite.
When this was completed, I popped over to Sandringham Court in Maida Vale to quote for a new boiler. After which I jumped(?) on the tube over to Stoke Newington as one of the electricians was re-wiring an entire property and required some additional GU10 lamps .
On my return to Soho I got called to a loo blockage in D’Arblay Street, when this was resolved I headed back to the Fox Soho office in Moor Street to complete some paperwork and answer my emails, after which plan the work orders for the next day, during which we received a delivery of blackout blinds, so promptly dispatched a carpenter over to Henrietta Street in Soho to fit and install.
For myself, a key element and indeed joy of such a day is drawing on our own personal (pedestrian) version of ‘The Knowledge’ for navigating and servicing customers in areas such as Soho, Covent Garden, Holborn and central London. It results in us getting to know and utilise the many forgotten lanes, alleys and walkways, unknown to so many people, unseen gems to many, but obviously not forgetting the more obvious architectural treasures such as Meard Street in Soho (above).
On a practical note it results in maximising our focus and response time on each project, not to mention the congestion charges saved for our customers and ourselves each day – a distinct advantage over many companies, something most trades in central London areas such as Soho, Covent Garden and beyond would struggle to match.
Every day in August became just as diversified in jobs, but with much the same intensity. So much for my Fit-Bit thinking it was having a rest – it was fireworks every day!
